According to Jeffrey Voas, the IEEE Fellow and computer scientist at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), there are harmful malwares in more than 2,000 free apps currently available, and Voas says that almost 1 in 100 free apps in 2012 will visibly contain malware — and there are possibilities for even more malware which will be beyond immediate detection.

A Turning Point for webOS

2011 has been an exciting year for mobile app industry with many dramatic developments, latest being HP’s announcement to make webOS available as open-source software.

HP had acquired the software from ailing Palm at a whooping price of US$1.2 billion in 2010 which had raised hopes of giving webOS a fresh leash of life. But due to lack of vision and clear cut strategy, HP failed to gain market share for webOS and had to announce its decision to discontinue with webOS operations in last August, leaving the future of webOS uncertain.

Windows 8 is seen as a giant step forward by Microsoft in smartphones and tablet mobile space, which are considered computing devices of the future. As of today, Apple rules tablet market with its iPad. We have seen a lot of others fail – recent example being HP webOS phones. Mobility in HealthCare – Perspectives from HIMSS 2011


It is a well-known fact that healthcare professionals have adopted tablets, specifically iPad, in large numbers. The adoption was visible at HIMSS 2011 (Healthcare Information and Management Information Society) – while sitting at a break area, 4 people were using their iPads to email and share material, while only one person had his laptop on. As early as last year, people using their laptops to check their emails during the breaks in a conference was very common.

The increased interest in mobility was clear in one of the opening events – HIT X.O – Beyond The Edge –“Keep Up – HealthCare goes Mobile” – The conference room was jam-packed, showing the interest in the topic. Read more

Barnes & Noble up for sale – Another one in the series of disruptions brought in by mobile devices?

Its only been a year or two since we have been hearing about e-readers in a big way – We are already looking at a leading book-seller up for sale, impacted by the changing business models. According to a leading analyst, going private would allow Barnes & Noble to accelerate its investment in its digital book platform.
