The potential effects of mobility trends on the automobile industry is increasing and gaining immense popularity, every day. Android Auto – the Big Innovation

Google announced Android Auto on June 25, 2014, at Google I/O 2014. The telematics standard, which is developed by Google, allows all the mobiles, running the Android operating system, to be operated in the vehicles through the head unit of the dashboard.

Android Auto performs several functions like offering the driver major control over GPS mapping and navigation, music, SMS, telephony, and also, web search. Touchscreen and button-controlled head unit displays are supported. Along with this, hands-free operation and voice commands are ensured for safe driving. The compatible apps include Google Maps, Google Play Music and many more features and apps.

Android Auto emerges triumphant in extending the functionality of an Android mobile device in a vehicle on to the dashboard. The users should be running Lollipop on their mobiles and must have a vehicle which supports Android Auto. The Android device is connected to the vehicle via the USB cable. The dashboard serves as an external display for the Android device and presents a car-specific user interface.

Automobile manufacturers that will be offering Android Auto in their cars include Audi, Bentley, Chevrolet, Fiat, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Renault, Skoda, Suzuki, Toyota, Volkswagen , Volvo and many more. The first cars, with support for Android Auto, will be available from late 2014. An Android Auto Software Development Kit (SDK) will be released to the developers, very soon. This will allow the third parties to modify their apps, accordingly, in order to work with Android Auto. APIs will be available, only, for music and messaging apps, during the initial stages.

Apple CarPlay – A Redefinition of Mobility

iOS in the Car, now, goes beyond services like iPod Out and Siri. Now, you can access your phone calls, iTunes, Maps and Messages within the mobile OS. iPhone makers claims to have “95 % car integration”. The manufacturers are trying to reach out to the mass and convey that the platform is, now, able to work and is compatible with, nearly, all modern cars of today.

Apple’s iOS software already powers the iPhone and the iPad. Apple had launched CarPlay, which is based on iOS, and is its first in-car operating system. The drivers will be able to use Apple Maps as in-car navigation, and they can also, listen to music via iTunes and Spotify. Calls can be, easily, made through the system. With the help of the Siri voice recognition platform, the messages can be read to the person, who is driving, and he can respond by replying. CarPlay lets the drivers use their iPhone in the car with little or no distraction at all. And iCar is the concept for Apple Car.

The extension of the Apple Ecosystem into high-end cars is supposed to be an innovative step to make our iOS devices more useful, thus, making the mobile experience better. The CarPlay combines physical hardware, the in-car software and the dashboard, to provide us a delightful experience. It is a blend of navigation, information, communication and entertainment. This is a new era which is known as the era of “connected cars”. According to experts, a day will come when automobiles might become the largest social mobile devices that we will own. The new era will be the one in which the endeavors will be focused on making continuous refinements, thereby, redefining mobility.

Personalization is the key word. Imagine everything, like gaining entry into the car, adjusting the seat, starting the ignition etc. is performed by one touch. How will it be to customize the screen for the person who is driving the vehicle? A customer survey reveals that customers want offerings which will enable them to be efficient while they are driving their cars and make them feel that driving is a pleasure and not a chore.
