iPhone to iPad apps porting
iPad development utilizes Cocoa Framework for iPhone, hence iPhone apps will work as is on iPad. However, the app experience may be sub-optimal and may not use all the functions and screen real-estate provided by iPad. Hence we propose the following approach:
Re-design the functionality of iPhone app from a user interface and device functions provided by iPad
Identify the incremental functionality and look & feel that need to be incorporated
Use the iPhone source code as a base-line, and modify to create the iPad functionality. If the app functionality is very different from an iPad app (e.g. flipping pages for a magazine, instead of a navigation bar), then re-develop the app for iPad platform
Mac to iPad apps porting
Mac development utilizes Cocoa Framework for Mac, whereas iPad development utilizes Cocoa framework for iPhone. Hence Mac apps will need to be modified to work on iPad. The core logic from the Mac app can be re-used, with the interaction part using touch framework developed using the iPhone/iPad SDK. We propose the following approach to port Mac apps to iPad.
Start-off with the existing Mac look & feel and functions as baseline
Identify additional features and limitations for iPad (e.g. GPS as an additional function, inability to use Flash as a limitation)
Use the core logic and modify the source code to add touch based interaction framework using iPhone SDK
Modify/add iPhone SDK based functions to take care of functionality additions and limitations.
